Glencairn beach goers adivised of parking closure

The City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management branch will commence with the full upgrade of the Glencairn beach parking area on 6 April 2021.
This informal gravel parking area will now be formalised and paved. The work will take approximately six months to complete during which the area will be closed to the public for safety reasons.
'We are excited about the upgrades to the Glencairn coastal area and to finally commence with work to pave the gravel parking area. The project will commence after the Easter weekend and I kindly request the public to please avoid the area so that the construction activities can continue unobstructed. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and appreciate the public’s patience during this much needed public beach parking upgrade,’ said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt.
The site will be handed over officially to the appointed contractor on 1 April 2021, but work is only planned to begin after the Easter weekend. The project will include the demolition of the old ablution block and the construction of a new ablution facility.
The arrangements for access to Glencairn Beach during construction is as follows:
Vehicle Parking
- Alternative parking is available at the formal parking area at the northern end of Glencairn (Fish Hoek end) beach
- On-street parking along Main Road near the railway station and subway
- Parking area at the Clovelly Station
Pedestrian access
- The footway on the seaside of Main Road will be kept open at all times
Beach access
Access to the beach and tidal pool will be via the subway and the new coastal walkway
Access to the beach and walkway is also available via the steps that lead off the Simon’s Town end of the carpark under the railway bridge
Signage directing the public to the access under the railway bridge will be erected.
